The department of design within the college of visual and performing arts offers degrees in interior design, graphic design, and illustration. The interior design program aims to prepare students for a variety of careers in both residential and commercial design. Coursework in the program begins with art foundations, basic design, and moves into studio design classes, art history, building construction, materials, and business practices.

The graphic design degree teaches students to design typefaces, magazine and book layouts, packaging, corporate identities, signs, web pages, multi-media presentations, and more. Students are also taught to solve design problems and to approach design from the perspective of a client. Coursework in the program includes drawing, art history, illustration, typography, digital imaging, photography, and graphic design.

In the illustration program students learn traditional techniques as well as modern skills. Students are taught to be artists, but also to work within the confines of a client's needs. Coursework covers many types of illustration including educational, editorial, technical, figure drawing, and digital illustration.

The college of visual and performing arts also offers a BFA in photography. Instructors emphasize technical skills as well as personal creative development in the students. Students take courses in color, documentary and photojournalism, studio lighting, bookmaking, and participation in an internship with a commercial studio or gallery. Students are also encouraged to take courses from Winthrop's college of business.

The department of theater and dance offers a BA in theater with a concentration in design and technical theater. Students in this program learn the basics of all aspects of theater including performance, production, history, stage management, and directing. With a design concentration, emphasis is placed on lighting, scenery design, costume, and stagecraft.

To be considered for financial aid, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This determines what type of aid students may be eligible for. Types of aid include federal and state grants, federal loans, private loans, and scholarships. South Carolina residents may also eligible for the state's Lottery Tuition Assistance.
