Situated in the southern metropolis of Nashville, Tennessee State University is surrounded by a milieu of cultural activities and opportunities. Tennessee State University was founded as a land-grant university in 1912 as Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State Normal School for Negroes. Over the decades the university has grown substantially, now boasting students from 42 states and 45 different countries. The university continues to encourage vocational and technical education and career development, as well as offering the development of critical thinking skills through access to the liberal arts.
Tennessee State University offers the BA in graphic design. Course work consists of drawing and basic graphics, two and three-dimensional design, photography, printmaking, computer graphics, typography, special topics, and internship. The department is participates actively in local, regional, and national art shows and competitions. The program is designed for graduates to enter the world of professional graphic designers, as well as prepare the student to begin graduate studies in the field. Study abroad programs that focus on art and design are also available.
