About Southwestern Illinois College
Southwestern Illinois College is a 2-year community college with a main campus located in Belleville, Illinois. The city of Belleville is just 20 minutes east of St. Louis, Missouri, home of a 90-acre zoo complete with over 5000 animals from 700 species, an insectarium, a children's zoo, and a miniature train. St. Louis also offers historical sites, river cruises, and more for visitors of all ages. Belleville itself boasts several annual events, including Art on the Square, the annual art fair recently ranked number one in the nation by the Art Fair Source Book.
SWIC offers 2-year AA and AFA degrees in art. With a 2-year degree, students can either enter the workforce at an entry level or transfer to a 4-year university to complete a Bachelor's Degree in art. A BA offers many career opportunities, including media or advertising designer, architect, illustrator, graphic artist, animator, interior designer, or photographer. The course of study for each student within the visual arts is to be individually coordinated with the art faculty at SWIC upon admission to the school. Courses available for study include basic design, photography, drawing, typography, advertising design, and digital imaging. Students participate in both classroom study and studio work. Art students in their second and final year of study at SWIC will also take a course called 'Special Topics in Art,' which is described as "an in-depth study of various areas in Art presented through lectures, discussions, and/or individual research by the students." Topics of the course vary according to the students' chosen field of concentration. The course generally includes travel/study activities as well.
SWIC offers foundation scholarships to new and returning students. These scholarships can be applied for online through SWIC's Web site. There are many scholarships available in varying sizes. The criteria varies as well, and may be dependent upon course of study, academic merit, resident county, financial need, or any combination of these. There are even some awards that are to be used solely for the purpose of purchasing books.
Southwestern Illinois College is accredited via the North Central Association's Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP). As an AQIP institution, continuing accreditation is dependent on an ongoing cycle of self-examination, identification of programmatic and institutional needs, and a program of self-improving positive action. SWIC offers many services to its students, including free tutoring at the Success Center, academic and therapeutic counseling through the Department of Counseling and Human Development, multicultural services through the Minority Transfer and Multicultural Student Services Center, and career services through the Career Activities and Employment Center.
