About South Arkansas Community College

South Arkansas Community College is a public, 2-year institution located in El Dorado, Arkansas. El Dorado is the site for several annual events, hosting a variety of festivals every season. In the Spring, the Mayhaw Festival, a celebration of the mayhaw berry, is hosted by the South Arkansas Historical Foundation, with a crawfish boil the same weekend. In the Summer, the Fantastic Fourth Celebration in July includes a 5k run, an antique car show, and fireworks. In the Fall, the SouthArk Outdoor Expo in September focuses on the great outdoors. Exhibitors sell hunting and fishing gear, wildlife art, books, outdoor apparel, recreational vehicles and more. In the Winter, El Dorado hosts the largest Christmas parade in the state. The city is also home to the South Arkansas Arboretum State Park, a 13-acre site with walking trails among plants indigenous to Arkansas¡¦ West Gulf Coastal Plain region and exotic species including flowering azaleas and camellias.

SouthArk offers a 2-year AAS degree program and a 1-year technical certificate program in graphic arts and advertising design. The degree program requires a total of 60 credit hours, including general education requirements such as composition, algebra, art appreciation, psychology, and speech. Students also study foundational courses in drawing and computers and multimedia, plus an introduction to computer graphics, color and design theory, and microcomputers in the first year of the program. In the second year, students continue on to study desktop publishing, Web design, Adobe Photoshop, and principles of marketing. To complete the degree, students must also choose from a list of restricted electives including painting, advanced Web design, and computer-aided design and complete a graphic design capstone course. The certificate program requires only 30 completed hours, consisting of courses in drawing, art appreciation, computers and multimedia, color and design theory, and desktop publishing in the first semester. The second semester includes an introduction to computer graphics, composition, Web design, advanced desktop publishing, and an introduction to Adobe Photoshop.

South Arkansas Community College funds a number of scholarships for full or part-time degree or certificate seeking students. Available institutionally funded scholarships include the Presidents Scholarship, Valedictorian and Salutatorian Scholarships, the Freshman Recognition Scholarship, the Part-time Academic Scholarship, the Student Ambassador Scholarship, the GED Scholarship, Skills USA, HOSA, and the Miss Ouachita River Pageant. The South Arkansas College Foundation also offers scholarship awards to new, incoming and continuing students. General scholarships include the Alpha Xi Scholarship, El Dorado Civitan Golden Door Endowed Scholarship, El Dorado Jaycees Scholarship, Charles A. Hays and Systems Group Endowed Scholarship, Charles E. Cowger Endowed Scholarship, and Omazel Lawson Endowed Scholarship. Other available scholarships are categorized by department, including Fine Arts and Trade and Industry scholarships.

South Arkansas Community College is accredited by the North Central Association of College and Schools. Student Support Services at SouthArk provides academic and personal counseling, tutoring in math, science, and English, workshops on study skills, test taking, test anxiety, college survival skills, and cultural activities. SouthArk also provides career services to students through an online job placement site, a credit and non-credit class called Career Management and Job Search, and an annual job fair. The college also supports and promotes student clubs and organizations to serve the interest of both the students and the school. Most organizations have open membership available to all students. Groups currently in existence at SouthArk include the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, the Inter Activity Council, and several national honors, technical, and professional organizations.
