About Shelton State Community College
Shelton State Community College is located in Tuscaloosa, a city situated on the Black Warrior River in the western part of the state of Alabama. The city is home to a multitude of museums, including the Children's Hands-On Museum, the Murphy African-American Museum, the Alabama Museum of Natural History, and the Paul Bryant Museum. The Westervelt-Warner Museum of American Art is located in the northern part of the city. In addition to art and history, Tuscaloosa offers much in the way of culture. The city is home to many performance groups including the String Quartet Society, Theatre Tuscaloosa, a symphony orchestra, a children's theater, community singers and dancers groups, and the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre.
SSCC is a two-year public community college with a diverse student body offering both academic and technical education on two local campuses. The college offers general education and technical programs. In addition, SSCC is home to the Alabama Fire College, offering instruction to public service professionals throughout the state. The outstanding art, music, and theater programs available have caused the college to be named Alabamaâs Community College of the Fine Arts. Shelton State Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and the Associate in Applied Science degrees.
SSCC offers a short-term certificate program in commercial art. The certificate can be earned in as little as three semesters, or one year. The commercial art program is designed to help students enhance artistic skills while developing the ability to apply those skills to advertising and design applications. Students have access to MacIntosh computers and the most up-to-date software used in the advertising industry. Required courses include an introduction to computers in commercial arts, principles of design, design drawing, basic and intermediate advertising design, special topics in commercial art, and imaging. A one-hour college orientation course is also required of every student at SSCC.
