About Rio Hondo College

Rio Hondo College is a two-year community college in Whittier, California, located in Southeast Los Angeles County. Whittier is a city steeped in history, with landmarks such as the Jonathan Bailey House, the home of the city's first settlers, and Pio Pico Historical State Park, the home of the last Mexican Governor of California. Whittier also has a large and active arts community whose efforts are visible throughout the city. One such example is an annual event known as the Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts. Talented artists from Southern California exhibit and sell a variety of art, including paintings in a variety of mediums, pottery, jewelry, ceramics, hand-woven clothing, stained and blown glass, sculptures, and photography. Many artists also demonstrate their skills with live exhibitions. In addition, the festival offers children¡¦s art workshops, musical entertainment, an Arts & Crafts Boutique, and the Starving Artist Cafe.

RHC offers an extensive architecture program. Students may choose to earn an AS Degree in architecture for university transfer or employment in architectural firms, design, architectural engineering and construction-related industries. The 2-year program includes general education requirements, plus required courses including an introduction to technical drawing and graphics, architectural and technical freehand sketching, engineering design graphics, AutoCAD, residential architecture drawing and design, and an architectural design studio. Students also have the option of majoring in architectural design and drawing, a program which contains a larger focus on CADD applications and also includes a course in print reading for construction. Other required courses are the same as in the basic Architecture major. Students in the drawing and design major may choose to earn a Technician Certificate of Achievement in two semesters, or complete general education requirements as well to earn an AS degree in two years.

RHC also offers a program in the study of commercial art. To acquire the Associate of Science Degree in commercial art, students must complete the general education requirements along with required courses including art history surveys, freehand drawing, two and three-dimensional design, graphic design, computer graphics, and an introduction to digital imaging. The program is ideal for students wishing to enter the field of advertising at an entry level, or for transfer to a four-year college for completion of a bachelor's degree in advertising or a related field.

RHC's Mass Communications department offers students the opportunity to study film and video design within the mass media specialization. Students may earn an AS degree in two years by completing general education requirements plus required courses including mass media in modern society, documentary film, a survey of motion pictures, radio, and television, creative film and video making, photojournalism, and a video editing lab. Students must also select two out of the three following courses: broadcast news, introduction to studio/field multi-camera production, or advanced studio/field multi-camera production. Prior to graduation, students will also complete an internship in the field of television, radio, or journalism. For those seeking a shorter program, the department offers a Mass Communications Certificate program to be completed in one year. This program is the same as that for the degree, but eliminates the need for completion of general education requirements.

The Mass Communications department also provides a program in multi-media computer animation specialization. Students may complete a one-year program for a Certificate of Completion, or choose the two-year program to receive an Associate of Science degree. Both programs require the same core curriculum, with the degree program adding the requirement of completion of the general education curriculum for graduation. Required courses include desktop publishing, graphic design, computer graphics, computer animation, creative video and filmmaking, video editing lecture and lab courses, introduction to studio/field multi-camera production, and mass media in modern society.

RHC also offers a two-year Associate of Science degree program in photography. Students within the program must complete general education requirements, plus core curriculum courses including art history surveys, freehand drawing, two and three-dimensional design, digital imaging, large format photography, and three levels of basic photography from beginning through advanced.

Rio Hondo College provides a variety of scholarship funds to current Rio Hondo students. The scholarships are funded through donations of individuals, companies and organizations. RHC provides a general scholarship application available through the college Web site. Additional documentation such as letters of recommendation may be required.
