Northern State University was established in 1901 as the Northern Normal and Industrial School as a response to serve the need for higher education in northern South Dakota. The faculty consists of 120 full-time professors, 85 percent of whom hold the terminal degree in their discipline. The student-faculty ratio is 19:1, ensuring that students have access to their professors. The university's technological capabilities and student-access to that technology is among the best in the nation.
Northern State offers a four-year BA program in graphic design. A two-year AS in graphic design is also available. Admission to either program requires the submission of a portfolio that includes ten examples of original artwork, high quality slides, photographs, Web portfolios or a CD portfolio. Accepted students who enroll are eligible for a variety of scholarship awards administered annually by the art department. To qualify, students should indicate in writing that they wish to be considered for an award.
The AS includes courses covering the basics in drawing, graphic, computer, and photographic design and technique. An exposure to art history is also provided. The two-year program also offers training in drawing, design, Web page design, digital photography, and art history.
The BA includes coursework beyond what is offered in the AS program and includes training in digital imaging, illustration, printmaking, a commercial art internship, and the development of a senior portfolio culminating in a review. Exposure to 2D motion graphics, Web page design, digital imaging, video, and illustration, interactive design, animation, and a senior digital portfolio review round out the four-year BA program.
Northern State offers financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and college-work study. Most aid is awarded on basis of need, and more than eighty percent of students receive some form of financial aid. Prospective and current students should be aware of the March 1 Federal and University deadline for scholarship application.
The office of student affairs provides counseling, career development services, and international student services. Northern State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in Chicago, IL, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the South Dakota Department of Education.
