About National American University-Rapid City

Situated in the exciting southwestern part of South Dakota, National American University offers the diversity of stunning rural vistas and the lively culture of city life. Rapid City is located in the famous Black Hills area, with Mount Rushmore as its monumental centerpiece. The area is served by four major airlines, making domestic travel affordable and convenient. The area is rich in natural beauty, including crystal blue lakes, mountains, and large expanses of quiet forest. Camping, hunting, and fishing opportunities abound. Other outdoor activities available include more than 6,000 miles of bike trails, golfing, rockhounding, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife photography, rock climbing, motor sports, and a large variety of water sports. Motorcycle enthusiasts can look forward to the famous, annual gathering in nearby Sturgis, S.D. Also nearby are the Badlands, the infamous town of Deadwood, Jewel and Wind Caves, and the Crazy Horse Monument. Area shopping is ample and diverse, from the 120 stores at the Rushmore Mall, local strip malls, numerous Black Hills Gold shops, Native American arts and crafts outlets, and other specialty shops. Dining options are equally diverse, including ethnic cuisines such as Russian, Italian, and Fillipino, as well as popular chain restaurants, western-style steakhouses, and plentiful fast food dining options for those in a hurry. A prominent cultural feature of the Rapid City area are the Lakota People of the Northern Plains. The Lakota have many social events throughout the year that are specifically related to their language and culture. The He Sapa Wacipi event is held annually at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, and includes hundreds of Indian singers and dancers in competition. Other attractions include Storybook Island, Formal Gardens, Dinosaur Park, the Dahl Arts Center, Museum of Geology, The City of Presidents, the Journey Museum, a variety of walking tours through the city¡¦s many historic districts, and the City View Trolley.

Graphic Design

National American University offers a B.S. in information technology with a specialization in Internet systems development. The program provides the students with the skills required to design, develop, and maintain interactive Internet Web sites. This bachelor¡¦s degree program prepares the student to work in the dynamic field of Internet development as the information technology professional on a website design team. Coursework for the major includes the principles of programming, Internetworking fundamentals, hardware and software configuration, database design and query concepts, systems analysis and design, and an integrated systems project.

Students may choose to work towards an emphasis in Internet systems development as part of their degree. Coursework for this specialization include Web design, interactive Web multimedia design, CI electives, client-side scripting, Internet information service administration, and server-side scripting.

A variety of student organizations are available at National American, including President¡¦s Advisory Council, Student Senate, Phi Beta Lambda, and career groups. Student services include career development, job placement assistance, and personal development.

National American provides financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study, and low-interest loan programs through federal, state, and local sources. Since the University is private, out-of-state residents pay the same tuition and fees as in-state students. Prospective students and their families are encouraged to contact the University financial aid office early in order to apply for aid.
