H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College is a comprehensive two-year technical college with two campuses located in Montgomery, Alabama, state capital and home of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The city hosts many other annual events including the Jubilee City Fest, the Alabama Highland Games, and the Alabama National Fair. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is the fifth largest museum in the world. Other noteworthy sites include the Alabama State Capitol, the Rosa Parks Library and Museum and Children's Wing, the First White House of the Confederacy, the Hank Williams Museum, Blount Cultural Park, and the Civil Rights Memorial and Center.
Trenholm Tech offers a Specialized Training Certificate in Apparel and Designs. The program is designed to prepare individuals to enter and progress in careers in the spectrum of apparel design and construction. These career skills include selecting, purchasing displaying, designing, marketing and merchandising apparel. It also includes tailoring and custom designing. Available emphases include Tailoring and Alterations or Interior Design. The program may be completed in as little as two terms, or less than one year. Coursework includes introductions to apparel trades and textiles, apparel industry tools and machinery, textile analysis and testing, concepts in apparel construction, a basic apparel construction lab, advanced applied production, and special topics in commercial sewing. The tailoring and alterations emphasis also includes courses in basic and advanced tailoring and alterations, accessories and related merchandise, and pattern adjustments and fitting. The interior design emphasis includes courses in window treatments, soft interior furnishings, and a soft interior furnishings construction lab.
Trenholm also offers a two-year associate degree program in applied technology in drafting and design technology, plus a Specialized Training Certificate with a technical drawing emphasis, and Certificates in Drafting and Design Technology with emphases in either Industrial or Architectural Drafting. The certificate programs can be completed within two years as well. Associate degree requirements include computer aided drafting, technical drawing, technical mathematics, plane trigonometry, solids modeling, an architectural drafting suite, and industrial drafting, plus a few general education requirements. The certificate requirements vary according to emphasis, but in general require similar coursework in lesser amounts with variation only according to emphasis.
Trenholm also provides a graphic communications technology program, offering a three-year associate degree, a two-year certificate program, and specialized training certificates available in three emphases and able to be completed in less than one year. The Associate degree program includes coursework in computers in graphics and printing, page design, illustration graphics, graphics applications, lithography, basic image editing, page layout, graphics software, portfolio preparation and presentation, screen printing, publication design, image editing, and multimedia presentation. Some general education courses are required as well. The two-year certificate program includes similar coursework, but eliminates some required courses including portfolio presentation, publication design, image editing, and multimedia presentation. The Specialized Training Certificate with a design emphasis requires the computers in graphics and printing, page design, illustration graphics, lithography, and basic screen printing courses only. The layout emphasis includes graphics applications, advanced lithography and screen printing skills, page layout, and graphics software only. The third available emphasis is in graphic trends, and requires specific coursework on current trends and practices in the graphic arts industry.
The Trenholm Tech Foundation annually awards scholarships to help students achieve their goal of becoming highly trained competitors in the workforce. The following types of scholarships are available through the Foundation: First-Generation College Student, Leadership, Dr. Anthony L. Molina Memorial Academic Excellence Scholarship, Mary and Marshall Anderson Health Services Technology Memorial Scholarship, and Mary and Marshall Anderson Academic Excellence in Health Services Technology Memorial Scholarship.
Both campuses of H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College are presently accredited independently by The Accrediting Commission of The Council on Occupational Education. An application for merger has been filed with the Commission. Available student services include a career center, a learning enhancement center, and student support services such as academic, financial, and personal counseling, mentoring, and self-help workshops.
