About Cowley County Community College
Cowley County Community College is a community college and vocational/technical school located in Arkansas City, Kansas. Arkansas City is home to the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum, housing over 45,000 artifacts, pictures and documents for exhibit and research. The museum also houses the Cowley County Genealogy Library, which houses Cowley County Cemetery records, Arkansas City Traveler obituaries, Cowley County Birth, Death and Marriage records, and the Robert Docking collection. Arkansas City is designated as a ¡§Tree City,¡¨ largely due to seventeen city parks. From picnicking to baseball and playgrounds to fishing, the parks provide a diverse range of amenities for every outdoor experience. Five miles northwest of Arkansas City is the Chaplin Nature Center, combining 230 acres of woodlands, prairies and streams and over five miles of walking trails.
Cowley offers a 2-year AA degree in graphic design. Coursework includes foundation drawing and design courses, visual communications, typography, graphic design and art history. The program focuses on the basics of good design through problem definition, analysis, idea exploration and development, focus, refinement, and production. From this foundation, the student can enter into to any of the many visual communication careers.
Cowley also offers a 2-year AAS degree in interior design, plus a certificate program in interior design. The degree program includes coursework in interior design fundamentals, drawing and printreading for interiors, materials and resources, and two design studio courses. Two semesters of internship and a course culminating in the development of a portfolio are also required. The certificate program includes much of the same coursework with the elimination of the general education requirements and only one internship required for completion.
Finally, Cowley offers a 2-year AGS degree in Web design. The program combines the art, science, business and technology aspects of Web design. Coursework for this degree includes computer applications or computer literacy, Web site production, beginning Web design, introduction to computer graphics, Web multimedia and animation, and Web site production. The program also requires completion of an internship and development of a portfolio for graduation.
Cowley offers many institutional scholarships. However, they are available to Kansas residents only. Only athletic and endowment scholarships are available to out-of-state students. Institutional scholarships include trustee scholarships, presidential scholarships, and departmental scholarships. One example of a departmental scholarship is offered by the Business, Computer & Information Technology Department, offering tuition and book scholarships to a limited number of qualified applicants. Selected applicants are mailed applications for completion.
NMSU provides many resources to students, including career and employment services, academic advising, disability services, tutoring services, health services, and a wellness center. There are many on-campus clubs and organizations available, including intramural sports such as beach volleyball, flag football, and bowling. Students can play in the Concert, Jazz, or Pep Band, or sing in the Concert Choir or the C.C. Singers campus group. There are special interest groups for drama, chess, journalism, and more, plus honor societies and student government groups, all available to all students for participation.
