About Chemeketa Community College

Chemeketa Community College is located in Salem, Oregon, the second largest city in the state. Salem lies in the center of the lush Willamette River valley, 47 miles from Portland and an hour from the Cascade Mountains to the east and an hour from the ocean beaches to the west. Students can enjoy hiking, camping, biking and more outdoor opportunities as well as take advantage of Salem's sports tournaments, Arts Fairs, theater and music.

Chemeketa Community College offers professional certificates in several computer-related technical programs, an AAS in visual communications, and a transfer program in art. The AAS takes two full years to complete beginning in fall term. Most students spread their work over three years, which allows for more in-depth study and taking additional classes. Prerequisites include extensive computer knowledge with Macintosh computer systems.

As part of the Visual Communications program, students may work in both classroom and live production settings to learn technical skills, teamwork and creative problem-solving essential to a lifelong career. Some courses include layout, typography, photography, and electronic imaging. Students will produce both a traditional print and digital portfolio of work including a portfolio, stationery package and resume in preparation for entering the job market.

The transfer program in art includes the basics to continue on to other Oregon schools to complete a four- to five-year program in art. Oregon state colleges and universities offering Bachelor of Arts and/or Bachelor of Science degrees in Art are Eastern Oregon University, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon and Western Oregon University. OSU has majors in Art, Art History, Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Photography, and UO has majors in Art History, and Fine and Applied Arts.

The advantage to attending Chemeketa Community College is mainly to Oregon resident students who can take advantage of lower tuition fees. All students have access to Federal aid through a FAFSA application, but Chemeketa also provides financial resources through various scholarships and grants.

A two- to three-year education is ideal for students who want to achieve an education and enter the workforce quickly. These degree programs also provide students with the background necessary to fast track a bachelor's degree when the time feels right to continue education later. The atmosphere provided by Chemeketa Community College and surrounding Salem is ideal for students who want to study in a supportive yet exciting environment. Chemeketa Community College is accredited regionally by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Colleges (NWASC).
