Chaminade University of Honolulu
About Chaminade University of Honolulu
Chaminade University of Honolulu is a small, private Catholic college located on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. Built on a hillside just two miles from Waikiki Beach, one of the most popular beaches in the world, Chaminade offers access to everything the city of Honolulu and the island of Oahu have to offer. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, see the statue of King Kamehameha I, visit the Pearl Harbor memorial, or just head to the beach for surfing, paragliding, and more.
Chaminade offers a two-year AA degree or four-year BFA degree program in interior design. The program is designed to prepare graduates to be professionals with sound backgrounds in design basics, creative problem solving, technical and collaborative working skills, and understanding of industry business practices. Chaminade features an emphasis on environmentally friendly design, and is the only interior design program in the state of Hawaii. The school also offers a student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, putting participants on track for professional licensing. Students participate in an annual ASID student competition as well. There are opportunities for hands-on experience including on-site observation at construction sites and installation experiences.
Students are taught in many aspects of interior design including history of art and architecture, design process, use of color, textiles, and lighting in design, technical skills including drafting, CAD, photography, and presentation techniques, professional ethics, project management and business methods, universal design and sustainable design principles, dynamics of client interaction and collaborative teams, and communication of design solutions, including multimedia.
Chaminade offers many scholarship programs, including Freshman Merit Scholarships that are four-year and GPA-based, transfer Scholarships, athletic scholarships, Catholic, Marianist Leadership, and Parish scholarships, and the Founders Service and Leadership Award. Application for admission to Chaminade serves as the application for scholarships and grants.
In addition to the obvious draw of its location in Hawaii, Chaminade has much to offer prospective students. Class size is small, as is the faculty to student ratio, allowing for one-on-one personal attention. The university offers career counseling, academic advising, and a strong campus ministry. Students can choose to participate in the Marianist Biography project or apply for participation in the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program to round out their campus experiences and gain motivation and self-esteem that will serve them well in future careers and pursuits. Students with a desire to give back to the community can participate in the Service-Learning program to help prepare them for life, work, and service.
