Briarwood offers a 2-year AAS degree in Fashion Merchandising. The fashion merchandising program provides a basic understanding of merchandising in the apparel and textile industry. It emphasizes skills necessary for careers in such fields as retail, fashion promotion, and management. The four semester program blends general education with core curriculum for the degree. Core courses include introduction to fashion merchandising, advertising principles, and marketing in the first semester. The second semester includes courses in business law, financial accounting, fashion buying, consumer behavior, mathematics of retailing, and macroeconomics. The third semester includes study in retail management, visual merchandising, and sales management. The fourth and final semester includes a course in textiles, plus a marketing career seminar and internship that must be taken at the same time as co-requisites. The program director works with prospective internship site supervisors to ensure a meaningful and successful on-the-job experience for each student. In many cases, full-time employment is offered to the intern after graduation. Past typical internship sites have included Nordstrom, Kathy Faber Designs, Filenes, Limited Brands, Eblen's Corporation, and Anne Klein.
