Abilene Christian University is located in Abilene, Texas, approximately 150 miles from the metroplex of Dallas-Fort Worth. The city is home to a number of art galleries, including the Abilene Christian University Cockerell Art Gallery. The gallery offers a wide variety of exhibits and events, student and faculty shows, intercollegiate competitions, art workshops and lectures, and exhibits by nationally renowned guest artists. The city and region is also home to a number of art cafes, as well as The Center for Contemporary Arts, which offers exposure to more than 70-artist members' work and ten working studios. The center has four galleries and presents more than 24 exhibits annually by regional, national, and international photographers and artists working in a variety of media. Also of interest to creative types are the Grace Museum, which offers exhibits of art from around the world, and the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature. Another city feature of artistic note is the number of public sculptures. They are located all around the city, and include such designs as "Jacob's Dream." Located on the university's campus, the work is a 40-foot bronze with four angels ascending and descending a ladder that reaches toward heaven. A wide variety of shopping and dining options are available, including artist's supply stores.
Abilene Christian University was founded in 1906, and is a faith-based Christian institution. The university's stated mission is to educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world. Abilene Christian University offers the BA in graphic design, with an option to concentrate in two and three-dimensional design. The program offers practical as well as theoretical experience with the assistance of local and regional art and design companies. Many design students enrolled in the program are working professionally on a part-time basis before graduation. Educational trips to Houston, Santa Fe, New York, England, France, and Italy are also available.
Abilene Christian University offers financial assistance from various programs comprised of federal, state, and institutional funds. The programs include grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the financial aid office early in order to meet important deadlines for aid. Enrolled students are provided with academic, career, and personal counseling at no additional charge. Abilene Christian University is accredited regionally by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCC).
