fantasy-unicornsWhere Do You Go to Escape?
Many of us work in some capacity, go to school or in some cases do both. These daily routines can sometimes be hectic.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to leave the pressures of everyday life whenever we wanted to?

The popular children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, describes how a little boy was able to escape his troubles and go on the adventure of his life by sailing away on a magical peach.
.
We may not have access to a magical peach to leave our problems behind but we do have the ability to occasionally daydream and imagine wonderful places to go to. Use your imagination and talent to illustrate and draw for the James and the Giant Peach Daydream Contest.

The Contest
What magical land would you escape to and what would it look like? That’s what Disney Studios wants to know. The contest sponsor states:

“For this contest, put yourself in James’ shoes and show us where you go to escape the real world! Illustrate the magical landscape of your daydreams and let us see where your imagination takes you.

“Adventures this big don’t grow on trees, so let your imagination soar to Giant-Peach proportions!”

letter-bWhat Type of Type Do You Like?
Or to put it another way, what are your favorite fonts? Are you a Helvetica fan?  Or perhaps you like using esoteric fonts such as Mongolian Baiti or Comic Sans MS in your graphic designs?

If you are like many graphic designers, you have an extensive collection of fonts in your arsenal of design tools.

Finding just the right font is not only satisfying, but essential to a good design that utilizes typefaces as a major component in the overall scope and look of the graphics.

Some designers have created their own custom fonts for enjoyment or for use in specific design projects.

If this sounds like you, there is an opportunity to compete with other “fontphiles” in a font design competition.

“Art Moves” 3rd International Festival of Art on Billboards

linepurplefade
billboards-on-highwayBillboards as Art
The Art Moves 3rd International Festival of Billboard Art is seeking entries from all artists and graphic designers.

The competition’s purpose is to “propagate and popularize billboard art and to encourage artists to create art engaged in the reality.”

The theme of the billboard contest is “Together or Apart?” and is based upon the idea of various contrasts related to choices regarding human interaction with individuals and society as a whole.

For example:

* Is it better to be part of the whole as opposed to being individualistic?
* Is it better to take care of your own interests first and others second?
* Should group development overtake personal development?

The ideas can be used as starting points to develop the contest theme in other directions and areas. The interpretation of the slogan “Together or Apart?” is open-ended; designers and artists are encouraged to explore the gamut of ideas connected with the phrase.

billboard-chinese-government2Basic Contest Guidelines
Poster submissions can be done in any art technique. Digital format size should be 504 cm x 238 cm (198.4 inches x 93.7 inches) in a horizontal layout. Resolution required is 100 dpi, while the file format should be .tiff with CMYK color.

If the phrase “Together or Apart?” is included as a text element in the billboard design, English or Polish should be used.

While the actual full-sized poster file should be available on request, the sponsors only require a preview file for the official entry submission.

The format for previews is 30 cm x 14.1 cm (11.8 inches x 5.5 inches) in a horizontal layout, 72 dpi, jpg. The file should be named with the artists’ first and last name. You may submit up to 3 posters. If you are submitting multiple entries, number each from 1-3 respectively, along with your identification.

All entries must be accompanied with the proper entry form.

billboards-in-the-parkThe Awards
A contest jury will select the top 10 submissions from all entries.

The winners will have their work displayed on public billboard sites throughout the city of Torun, Poland during the Art Moves Festival, which occurs in September-October 2010.
