Cell phones have become a common sight in today’s world. Everyone from the very young to senior citizens use this electronic marvel to communicate, send text messages, and take pictures.
In 1983, the emergence of a truly portable cell phone cost the consumer $3,500 or the equivalent of $7,538 in 2009 dollars! Today, a cell phone can be free of charge with a the commitment of a one or two year contract with a wireless cell phone provider.
Cell phones have come a long way since 1983 and the quest for new innovative designs are a high priority for many cell phone manufactures. Fujitsu Limited is one of these companies and is announcing its Fujitsu Mobile Phone Design Award Contest. Professionals, amateurs, and students from graphic design schools, graphic design colleges, or other institutions of learning are eligible to enter this competition.
Fujitsu is running the event in partnership with the Japan Design Association, a non-profit organization to “help solve… [21st century societal] problems with the power of design and to promote the building of a beautiful and emotionally rich cyclical society.”
There are two categories for this contest. The official website states:

- Practical Category: Mobile Phones for 2001
A chance to let your dreams blossom - we are looking for inspirational designs. Winning designs in this category may be commercialized.
Design requirements: the design must show that the mobile phone is keyboard equipped, operable with one hand, and utilizes an LCD screen of 3″ or larger.
- Dream Category: Mobile Phones of the Future
Futuristic mobile phone designs that reflect your free and uninhibited imagination - we are interested in futuristic designs illustrating cutting-edge technologies as well as interface designs that open up new ways of use, which in turn can inspire new design ideas for Fujitsu’s line of mobile phones.
Judging will be conducted by a panel of industry design professionals. Exceptional submissions will be exhibited at
CEATEC JAPAN 2009 this October.
Winners will receive the following cash awards:
Grand Prize: 2,000,000 yen ($20,922)
Two Runner-Up Prizes: 500,000 yen for each category ($5,231)
Special Judges Awards: 100,000 yen each ($1,046)

Sending out
postcards as mementos to family and friends about our vacation experiences is a popular way of keeping in touch. Oftentimes, we add the familiar words, “Wish you were here.”
While postcards serve as a pleasant form of greeting and communication, some also see postcards as an art form.
The Postcard Art Competition and Exhibition (PACE) is now open for submissions. The event, sponsored by the Curt Teich Postcard Achieves and the Lake Country Discovery Museum, is accepting entries from artists 18 years or older.
The work submitted must be original. Photographs must be also original and not merely photographs of the original. Digital art is acceptable.
Entries are judged upon technical excellence, creativity, and content. A final set of twelve winning postcards will be made and the ease of reproduction of the submitted artwork is also a factor that will be considered in determining finalists.
Artists may submit as many entries as they wish. The entry fee is $20 per set of three works. An additional $5 for each entry past the original set of three must be enclosed.
Artwork must be 4″ x 6″. Each entry needs to be matted in a 4″ x 6″ window cut in an 8″ x 10″ mat board. Designs may be vertical or horizontal. Do not frame entries.
Twelve winners will be selected. Each winner will receive $150 and 200 postcards printed with their design. Winning entries will be eligible for Awards of Excellence in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100 for first, second, and third place, respectively. Winning designs will be displayed at the Lake County Discovery Museum and other galleries.
Twenty-four merit award winners will also be selected. Their designs will be offered for auction to the general public at a price not to exceed $150 per postcard.
A 30% commission is charged by the Lake County Discovery Museum on all works sold.
The deadline for entries is July 13, 2009. For a complete set of guidelines, contest rules, and the official entry form, click here.

In a
bizzaro world, left is right, up is down, and ugly is good. Now is your chance to do some reverse jewelry design by entering the
8th Annual Ugly Necklace Contest for 2010.
The sponsors describe this contest as, “A jewelry design competition with a twist,” and some would humorously add, twisted as well.
This contest will truly challenge your design skills as it goes in direct opposition to what you normally would do - create something that is pleasing to the eye.
It will take some real effort for some to get around this hurdle, but it’s all in good fun and a good exercise in meeting a set of design parameters you are not familiar with.
Land of Odds, the promoters of the Ugly Necklace event states:
“…As research into color and design has shown, your eye and brain compensate for imbalances in color or in the positioning of pieces and objects - they try to correct and harmonize them…
Because of this, any jewelry designer who attempts to achieve “Ugly,” has to have enough control and discipline to override, perhaps overcome, intuitive, internally integrated principles of good design…We invite all those jewelry designers out there to give it a try.“
Entering the contest requires three snapshots or scans of your ugly necklace. You will also need to write a short poem about it. Your poem will be part of the overall score of your entry.
Entries are judged by a panel from The Center for Beadwork and Jewelry Arts. Submissions will be critiqued on the hideousness of the design, shape, color, material content, functionality and of course, its wearability.
Visitors to the Land of Odds website vote on their favorite ugly necklaces. Up to 10 finalists will be chosen from the entries that score the most votes. From this group, a winner will be chosen.
First Prize: $992.93 shopping spree on the Land of Odds website.
Runner-Up Prize: $399.07 shopping spree on the website.
Ugly Necklace guidelines can be found by clicking here. Official contest requirements, such as color of necklace, size, assembly materials, dimensions, and other details are found here.
The contest begins September 15, 2009. The deadline for entries is March 15, 2010.
