Look3 Festival of the PhotographIf you happen to be in Virginia for the Jamestown gig, you might want to stop by Charlottesville sometime between 7 and 9 June for the LOOK# Festival of the Photograph. It’s just too cool.

The event will include outdoor projections, seminars and presentations from photographers including Sally Mann, William Albert Allard, and Eugene Richards. The LOOK3 festival is an outgrowth of informal outdoor shows organized over the last 20 years by National Geographic photographer Michael “Nick” Nichols, who is one of the festival’s executive directors.

Kokuyo Design Award 2007Kokuyo Co., Ltd. has announced the Kokuyo Design Award 2007 design competition, and encourages all those who wish to participate to submit their user-oriented product designs. The goal of the competition is to develop excellent ideas into commercial products. Applications are accepted through 30 June 2007.

Your goal is to design any product used daily either at home or in the work place (stationery, furniture, household items, etc.). The item must be adaptable and an unexpected usage for the design is a plus. Visit the site for details.

CA Clean Tech Open Competition

The California Clean Tech Open (CCTO), the USA’s richest cleantech business plan contest, is calling all early-stage clean technology companies to compete for prizes each worth over $100,000 in six categories: Smart Power; Air, Water & Waste; Green Building; Transportation; Renewables and Energy Efficiency.

Entering the competition is straightforward. Simply submit a three-page executive summary of your idea at www.cacleantech.com before June 30, 2007. CCTO will provide a template that we encourage you to follow. There is also an entry fee of $250 per team, which is reduced to $150 if your team is comprised entirely of full-time students, or if you enter before June 15. Design Awards 2007The Design awards wre created to celebrate those who demonstrate the highest standards in their work, to reinforce the design credentials of the industry, and to achieve ever higher standards of design. If you feel you’ve designed the best kitchen or bathroom as a seasoned or new designer, then enter your project to be considered for judging.

All entrants have the opportunity to win a certificate of recognition for the projects design, and many will be considered for project studies in the designer magazine. But, hurry - deadline has been extended, but only until 8 June. Visit the site for details and to download the application form.

4TH Singapore Short Cuts

4th Annual Singapore Short CutsInto its 4th season this year, Singapore Short Cuts is an annual showcase of outstanding short films by local filmmakers. The program features a diverse selection of Singapore short films from documentaries to animation and experimental work with post-screening discussions with the filmmakers.

Some of the filmmakers whose films have been featured in Singapore Short Cuts include Victric Thng, Eva Tang, Boo Junfeng, Wee Li Lin, Tan Pin Pin and Eric Khoo.

The 4th Singapore Short Cuts is co-organized by National Museum of Singapore and The Substation.

They are now accepting entries for recent Singapore short films made from 2006 to 2007. Deadline for submission: 15 June 2007. Visit the site for details.

Jackson Hole FestivalThe Jackson Hole Festival, which runs from 1-6 October, in Wyoming, US, is committed to nurture emerging Filmmakers, and has joined with the Wildlife Film Academy to offer an opportunity for 5 aspirant filmmakers to join some 650 filmmakers, broadcasters, conservationists and industry leaders for a week of screenings, hands-on workshops and important networking opportunities. The Festival was founded in 1991, and is dedicated to promoting natural history films that raise awareness and understanding of the creatures and habitats of the natural world. XNA Game Design Competition

Microsoft invites budding game designers to enter their new XNA Game Development Competition, with £5,000 GBP worth of prizes up for grabs. The theme is ‘Ocean Odyssey,’ and and everyone is welcome - from programmers to pianists, sculptors to scriptwriters who are UK & Ireland residents of 16 years of age or older at time of entry.

Artwork, Music and Gameplay (coding) are the three categories in which people can enter, with entrees to the first two categories seeing their work used in the final category - which will actually see a game or two being made. The competition is of course designed to highlight the power of the XNA development platform, which can aid even bedroom coders in creating their own games for the Xbox 360. Deadline 12 June for music and artwork, 15-17 June for game play entries. Visit the site for details.

New Zealand Memorial Park Project

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, in association with the Wellington City Council (New Zealand), propose to create a memorial park in front of the National War Memorial in Wellington. The park is intended to improve the setting of the National War Memorial, to create a space in the capital city for the development of new memorials from countries which New Zealand has a close relationship with and to provide a space for people to congregate on ceremonial occasions as well as provide a space that can be utilized by day to day users.

The Ministry is now seeking expressions of interest from architects, landscape architects or other designers for the memorial park. From those who make submissions, a number will be invited to submit design proposals. Of these, a final design will be selected and a contract for the development of the design of the park may be awarded. Entry is restricted to New Zealand based designers and New Zealand designers living overseas.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 5:00pm, Friday, 15 June 2007. Visit the site for details.

Lazzari Textile Design Competition

Born on the initiative of Associazione Culturale Lazzari, Textile Design Contest2 is aimed at the creation of links between young designers who are about to enter the world of work and the domains of Textile, Fashion and Clothing Industries. Held with the co-operation of Regione Veneto, Provincia di Treviso and Comune di Treviso, IUAV University it is also sponsored by the Camera di Commercio, Ascom, Unindustria Treviso.

Entrants will be asked to create and design a fabric through design methods that border on actual professional performances, with a direct concrete approach to textile industry and the related fields of fashion and Italian fashion in particular. Any creator, aged 18 to 30, may enter the contest provided he/she is interested in the design and creation of fabrics. For example students of Fashion, Design and Art Faculties, students of Schools for textile technicians, of Architecture, Fashion and Graphic Design Institutes, as well as of Academies of the Fine Arts etc. are all eligible.
