By Kids For Kids (BKFK) and The Weather Channel today announced that Elizabeth Rintels, 12, of Keswick, Virginia, won the grand prize in the national Going Green Challenge. Elizabeth won for her “Water Watcher” invention, a smart device designed to monitor and measure water usage.
Realizing just how much water it took to take a shower, Elizabeth began seeking a way to enhance awareness of water usage. After learning that reducing her shower time only by one minute would save approximately 1,000 gallons of water per year, she was driven to find a smarter way of utilizing this valuable resource. As a result, Elizabeth created “The Water Watcher,” a device that can be fastened to any faucet. It signals a red light and sounds a beep every time a half-gallon of water is used.

This internationally recognized design competition is open to young industrial designers who are still studying or who have graduated within the last two years. Current industrial design students as well as recent graduates have until January 31, 2009 to submit their product concepts to Braun (the participation is free of charge). The total prize money amounts to EUR 36,000. The winner of the BraunPrize will receive EUR 12,000 in prize money and a (paid) six-month internship in the Design Department at Braun. The other finalists will each receive a prize of EUR 5,000. The remaining prize money will be distributed in the form of special recognition awards at the discretion of the jury.

This graphic design contest is organized in cooperation with prominent Czech designers, and received posters will be exhibited in the futuristic foyer of the Alfa cinema in Sokolov. Everybody can take part in the contest, no matter whether a professional or an amateur. The contest is not only for our regional co-citizens. Works from abroad are welcome. We suppose that the author will most of the time be a human, however, in case there is a talented fly flying in your house, tell it about our web site.
Deadline is 5 September 2008. Received works will be exhibited in the futuristic foyer of the Alfa cinema in Sokolov from 1 October to 14 October. The exhibition will be open during the opening ceremony of the Film Sokolov on 10 October. Visit the site for details.

The 2009 ReBrand 100 is open to any rebrand launched anywhere in the world between January 2006 and September 2008. The rebrand can be for an enterprise-wide initiative, a single component of a brand or for a brand extension. Entries submitted can be from in-house corporate professionals, design firms, clients, architects, business strategists, advertising agencies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. The rebrand may have been for a product, service, entire company, non-profit organization, an individual, or a place.

Our Environment; the Good, Bad and the Ugly, will tell a story of the human foot print left on this earth. This exhibition is for those who consider themselves nature conservationists and just photographers with a conscience. The submissions will be juried by Robert Glenn Ketchum, international recognized photographer and advocate for the environment.
In connection with this show will be a workshop by Robert Glenn Ketchum “Making a Social Impact with Your Photography” on Nov. 7th through the 9th. More information can be found at The Center for Fine Art Photography’s website under workshops.

PISAF (Puchon International Student Animation Festival) celebrates its 10th edition from 7-11 November this year with its Festivity of imagination. Expect about 1,000 educational, artistic and popular pieces by international competitors from more than 30 countries, showcasing ten very special student - Indy directors from around the world. All applicants must have been enrolled in a college, university, or graduate-level institution at the time of production. Computers, films and/or other media in the frame-by-frame method are qualified for submission. Two categories available: Short Animated Films (Less than 30 minutes), New Media Contents: Internet, Spot, Mobile, Motion graphics, Interactive animations, etc. (Approximately 2 minutes). There is no entry fee.
