The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), is accepting professional and student film submissions for the 2008 festival, taking place 25 Oct. through 1 Nov. Competition categories include animation, documentary feature, documentary short, narrative feature, narrative short and student works. All entries must be postmarked by 16 June. Notification of selected entries will be completed by 15 Sept.
Paperless entries are preferred and can be submitted via Withoutabox’s International Film Festival Submission System (BrigitFest) at www.withoutabox.com. A paper entry form can be downloaded as a pdf file at www.scad.edu/filmfest by clicking on the “call for entries” link.

The WebGuild today announced their second annual WebGuild Web 2.0 Conference and Expo to be held on Tuesday, 29 January 2008 from 11 AM to 5 PM at the Santa Clara Marriot. This year’s WebGuild Web 2.0 Conference and Expo is geared towards entrepreneurs, startups and web professionals that want to learn the most up-to-date, industry best business practices for Web 2.0 companies. The event features keynotes, panels, expo, awards, networking sessions, reception, music, food and drinks.
The event’s five tracks will include Web 2.0 industry experts speaking on the new economics of web startups, funding, partnerships, public relations, overcoming legal issues and exit strategies. Attendees will learn from industry experts and thought leaders, connect with the companies changing the rules of the game and those redefining the future.

Hallmark Cards, Inc., today announces America voted Erin McGuire - a Sarasota, Fla., design student - the best of the best, beating nine other finalists to be named the Grand Prize winner in the company’s national card competition. McGuire’s design features a girl handing a card to a bird to enable the card’s delivery. The colorful, whimsical design garnered more attention than she suspected.
The 10 finalists received $250, with Hallmark matching that amount in a contribution to the Global Fund. Their designs
also were made into actual Hallmark cards currently for sale on http://www.Hallmark.com/you through the end of February. McGuire’s card will be sold on http://www.Hallmark.com/you through the end of the year. Just like the entire Hallmark (PRODUCT) RED collection, 8 percent of net wholesale sales of these cards will go to the Global Fund. As the Grand Prize winner, Erin received an additional $2,250, with Hallmark matching it in a contribution to the Global Fund.

With a prize pot of more than £25,000 cash and vouchers and a purpose-built, stunning outdoor exhibition of the top 100 images, to be seen by hundreds of thousands of viewers at the world famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, throughout the summer, this competition promises to be the world’s premier garden photography show.
Competitors are invited to enter single images or themed portfolios in the following categories, Trees, Plant Portraits, Garden Scenes, My Garden and Life in the Garden, and there’s also a Young Garden Photographer competition.

Zehnder America is excited about the fact that their products have been so well accepted by the design community for their high quality, innovation and functionality. For this reason, Zehnder is announcing the first Zehnder Design Contest. The contest is open to industry professionals who would like to showcase their talents and ideas through their entry of a completed bathroom, master bathroom, powder room, spa or mudroom. The project must demonstrate the practicality, versatility and functionality of a Zehnder towel radiator with regard to efficient heating and creation of a comfort zone in the home.
The contest is open to kitchen and bath designers, architects, interior designers, and custom builders. Each entrant must show the use of a Zehnder towel radiator in the project. For the fourth consecutive year, the James Dyson Foundation is hosting its highly regarded student design competition. Eye for Why is a tremendous opportunity for students at any of the NASAD-accredited degree programs or individual student members of IDSA to demonstrate new and alternative design solutions that simply work better.
This year, Dyson is introducing an exciting new way to share your entry and allow you to interact and connect with your peers. After all, you are now part of the design community, and community is an essential part of the design world. So think of the Eye for Why entry portal, powered by introNetworks, as the next evolution in social networking. Once you’ve created your profile, you can upload your design to share with the community or limit access to those in your network. You can also post videos, blog about your Eye for Why experience, and connect with other design students to share ideas and network.
Entries are due on 9 February 2008, and the contest is open to students at any of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design-accredited degree programs or individual student members of IDSA. Visit the site to learn more.

This is your invitation to enter the fifth annual 3×3 illustration competition. This year you’ll find they’ve simplified the entry process, with less paperwork to send in, fewer forms to fill out and you can enter and pay for your entries online. So if you’ve entered before, you’ll notice a dramatic difference in the process. But what haunt changed is their selection of judges–the very best as always. 3×3 has assembled some of the top illustrators working today to judge their student show. Not only are these judges great illustrators - there also educators who hold a high standard when it comes to illustration.
All entries must be uploaded to the contest site or your package must be postmarked no later than 14 February. The deadline for the professional show, which includes judges such as Steven Heller and Isabel Warren Lynch, is 14 March. Visit the site to learn more.

The annual YCN Design & Communication Awards exist to inspire, support and showcase emerging creative talent, and to connect it with the creative industries. The awards centre around a collection of Live Creative Briefs, written each year by partnering organizations, and spanning broad creative disciplines. Every Summer, an exhibition of all Commended work is hosted in central London. The event presents all work Commended as part of the most recent awards, alongside much
more besides. The intention, as ever, is to put Commended work in front of as many senior figures from across the creative industries as possible – with a big celebratory Private View.
Categories include artwork, films and animation, interactive work (Mac-readable format DVD or CD with full URL), and any accompanying scripts. Submissions are invited from anyone aged 30 years or under at the time of their entry, and not working full time in a creative department (i.e at a design or advertising agency). If you are undertaking work experience or a creative placement then you are welcome to enter. Submissions are welcomed from overseas, and there is no entry fee. If you are in full-time education, there are no age restrictions. The deadline for submitting work is 6pm on the 28th March 2008. Visit the site to learn more.

The Fuse Factory is inviting Ohio artists to submit works and projects that explore and reflect the convergence of art, technology, and science, with a focus on the interdependency and reciprocity of their respective developments and impact on culture and society. Works in the fields of interactive media, animation, net art, photography, video, film shorts, computer games, wearable technology, performance art, kinetic sculpture, transmedia, experimental electronics, and sound art will be accepted.

Things are looking rosy around here lately. As of tomorrow (10th), I’ll be without cigs for 3 months. The worst is over! Plus, I’m now going to manage my personal trainer (trying to recoup my costs for her training!). Now I’m thinking I might need a vacation. I know Pinky is ready to take flight.
Heads up: Renovation of The Center for Fine Art Photography’s new facility is almost complete and the target date for opening is Friday, 1 February. The Center’s new home is contiguous with the Poudre River Art Center, home of individual artists’ galleries as well as the F-stop Cafe and an outdoor pavilion all furthering the artistic enjoyment for visitors.
