NEW LOCATION AND NEW FILM OPPORTUNITIES

The Great Lakes Film Association is very proud to announce that, as of 1 February 2007 the Great Lakes Film Association offices will be housed within the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art at 145 W. 11th Street, Erie Pennsylvania. With its artistic decor and historic beauty, boasting fabulous art work by local artists, this phenomenal venue has for years hosted our many events including our independent film festival.

Since its inception, The Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art has remained central to the Erie arts community producing professional-level theatre that challenges audiences, expands the intellect, and provokes the senses, while offering a platform where local musicians, actors, magicians and other artists can perform in a cabaret setting.

With the incorporation of the Great Lakes Film Association, the Roadhouse Theatre will take the form of a multi-media facility offering not only theater and art, but film as well with regular year round programming.

With minor exceptions, Erie’s theaters virtually ignore foreign, independent, and documentary films despite the fact that there is a large art and cultural community in Erie County, which seems to demand independent film. Over the years we have seen both the attendance and support of the local Erie community grow substantially from only 1,500 attendees of our inaugural festival in 2002 to almost 4,000 in 2006. This is a considerable increase in a short time period and certainly indicates an interest, demand, and need for independent film to be offered to the people of Erie on a regular weekly basis.

In the spring of 2007 the Great Lakes Film Association, in a cooperative effort with The Roadhouse Theatre for Contemporary Art, will launch an independent film theater offering alternative cinema allowing the Erie public a chance to see these movies locally, instead of traveling to Pittsburgh and Cleveland as they would have to do normally.

We shall introduce three genre specific film series, Narrative and Documentary; Grindhouse; Children’s Educational and Animation.

The Narrative and Documentary films will be the series of movies that are POP films; these are the most recent, most popular films. These films will include art films and foreign films as well. The Grindhouse film series will be movies that tend to appeal to a slightly younger audience in our community, these include films of the horror genre and cult classics. Children’s Educational and Animation films will be presented each Saturday in an afternoon matinee time slot. These films will not only entertain and educate children, but also satisfy the parental need in the community for an informative and quality activity for both parent and child to enjoy.
