On November 27 in Paris (15.30-16.30 CET), a panel of internationally renowned experts from the environmental, design, and technology communities, are speaking at the International Forum on Design and the Environment presented by Electrolux Design Lab 2007. The Forum aims to raise awareness about climate change and sustainable design.

The European Union has embarked on a plan to cut down its energy consumption by 20% by 2020 - and the use of household appliances has a key role to play in achieving this goal, which is why Electrolux is hosting this global event. All four experts have a different background and will explain what they believe is key to tackle climate change…

  • Matali Crasset - Environmental design: looking at the bigger picture
    Matali is the award-winning French industrial designer who works across a wide range of disciplines including products, interiors and conceptual projects. She worked for Philippe Starck for five years before opening her own studio in Paris in 1998. www.matalicrasset.com
  • Celine Cousteau - Lessons from tribes in the Brazilian Amazon
    Celine is the granddaughter of legendary Jacques Cousteau. She has worked for three years in Costa Rica on a sustainable development project for The Earth Council, and now has a key role in her father’s Ocean Futures Society, which is an organization dedicated to exploring the global ocean, inspiring and educating people throughout the world to act responsibly for its protection. www.oceanfutures.org
  • Jason Bradbury - Green gadgets: making eco sellable
    Jason is the UK’s best known Gadget and Consumer Technology presenter who currently hosts The Gadget Show on Prime Time British television and Discovery Channel. www.jasonbradbury.com
  • Henrik Otto -Thinking outside the box: how to work with sustainable design
    Henrik is Head of Global Design Electrolux, heads up an organization of more than 100 designers in seven countries on four continents. Since joining Electrolux in 2004 he has embarked on a mission to make design one of the forces that powers the evolution of Electrolux into a leading global appliance brand. www.electrolux.com

About Design Lab: Design Lab is an annual global design competition open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students who are invited to present innovative ideas for household appliances of the future.

Hundreds of design students from around the world entered this year’s competition and were challenged to present their ideas on for eco-friendly and sustainable household appliances and solutions for 2020. Eight finalists have been invited to the final judging event and award ceremony in Paris, where the winner of Design Lab 07 will be announced on November 28.

The finalists are:

  • Return Pot: plastic decomposer, by Juan Ying-Hao from Cranbrook, Academy of Art, U.S.A.
  • Fog Shower: water-saving shower, by Joao Diego Schimansky from Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Parana, Brazil
  • Pebble: solar food cooker by Laura Pandelle from Ecole Boulle, France
  • e-Wash: natural detergent washing machine using soap nuts by Levente Szabo from Moholy-Nagy University of Art & Design, Hungary
  • Pure Washer: dual kitchen sink and detergent-free compact
    dishwasher using de-gassed water by Tatjana Voronova from Hochschule fur Gestaltung Schwabisch Gmund, Germany
  • Nature Wind: eco-solar aircleaner by Bae Won-Ho from Dong-A University, South Korea
  • Circompo: automatic food composter by Thanat Tengamnuay from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand
  • Go Fresh: energy-saving fridge with individual, honeycomb-shaped compartments by He Cheng Fei from Jiangnan University, China
