The poor dog at right looks like my third great-grandmother (we’re talking 1870s), but I think my grandmother’s nose was a little smaller. Students and recent grads are now invited to enter into the Inventables 2007 Student Competition that weighs their ability to come up with solid creative solutions. A $15 registration fee grants participants online access to 25 of Inventable’s materials and technologies to apply to a fresh design concept that is directly inspired by at least one of the selections.

Winners will receive cash prizes and will also snag a feature in the Inventables quarterly magazine distributed to clients, as will also be announced on their website. Deadline for submissions is 31 December 2007. Visit the site to learn more.

The City of Portland (Oregon) invites you to share your ideas on the design possibilities of housing oriented to shared courtyards. Portland is promoting courtyard housing as an additional infill housing type that can provide a quality living environment at densities higher than conventional detached housing.

The competition has two submission categories based on two types of infill site opportunities common in different parts of Portland. First is the ‘Inner Portland Infill Site’: 100 feet wide and deep with 4-10 units oriented to a shared courtyard with one parking space per unit. Another option is the ‘East Portland Infill Site,’ a little larger at 95 feet wide by 180 feet deep and 7-17 units. The courtyards themselves may be pedestrian-only or mixed pedestrian/vehicular courtyards.

$20,000 in prizes to selected designs. Submittals are due 24 October, winners chosen 14 November, and an awards reception 14 December. Visit the site to learn more.

The British Society of Underwater Photographers is accepting entries for its “International Focus-on” competition. The contest has been held for each of the last two years and is open to any photographer anywhere in the world.

Entries are free but limited to one per photographer, and the photo must show at least a partly underwater scene. Photos that have finished in the top three places of other photographic competitions are excluded.

Each photographer is judged by his or her peers. The winner will be declared following a vote at a meeting of the society’s members on 15 August. Deadline is 14 August. Visit the site for details.
