Festival projects can be found in over 150 different venues. There is no one main location but there are hotspots in East, West and Central London. You’ll get the know the city well!

BurdaStyle is thrilled to announce their first BurdaStyle Design Competition. As an open source website, they are hoping to facilitate more creative opportunities for the sewing community all over the world. Now they’ve come up with the perfect way for you to contribute to the site as well as to your own trophy case, or in this case, pattern library. Send them your designs and they will choose two winners to have their patterns professionally created, shot in a photo shoot, featured on BurdaStyle.com, and downloaded by other BurdaStyle users.

There are two categories to the contest. If you like to design, submit an illustration and tech drawing with specifications. If you feel more confident with patternmaking, make the pattern instead. You Tube has teamed with Sierra Mist to present the “Sketchies,” a three-round video elimination contest. The contest starts May 24 (Friday) and judges will complete their recognition of the first of three rounds by 7 June (I would get the video in ASAP, however). The grand prize is a production budget from Sierra Mist that allows the winner to create an online ad for its Sierra Mist Lemon Squeeze, which is being launched 21 May.

A panel of top Hollywood agents will review all initial entrants and choose 20 for presentation to the YouTube community. The community’s votes will determine 10 second-round entrants, who will provide the next episode of their series, with five becoming finalists and putting a third series episode at the mercy of the community. From 21 May through 11 June, Steve Madden will accept design submissions for a Fall or Holiday inspired shoe. Madden will narrow down the designs to the Top 5 Art + Sole Finalists. Then, he’ll turn the finalists over to the public for voting on 20 June.

Grand Prize winner will be flown to New York City to spend a day with Steve Madden and to watch the winning design come to life in his onsite factory (includes 2 night hotel accommodation). To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Helvetica typeface, Linotype invites designers worldwide to take part in the Helvetica NOW poster contest. This contest invites participants to design a poster, which will investigate the role of type in modern day life, and the way that typography – and Helvetica – affects our perception of the environment. The message and the visual exploration of Helvetica’s presence in our lives are open to every designer’s interpretation, and the use of photography is allowed.

The winners will be selected by popular vote. The voting will be carried out online at www.linotype.com/helveticaNOW starting in mid-October 2007. The winners will be announced in the January 2008 issue of the LinoLetter. Submit entries from July 4–October 4, 2007.
